Quick question: Any tips or advice on how fast long runs should be run? I've read several articles and they all vary from 30-120 seconds off of race pace. To me that seems like a big range and I want to make sure my long runs are productive without being destructive.

From allie on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 12:53:02 from 97.126.223.167

that's a great question -- i really don't know. i usually try to do my long runs at a fairly easy pace, but still keep up a decent effort (7:15 - 7:30 in the peak of marathon training). i also like to do fast finishes with the last 2-4 miles at MP or faster. in the past i've done long runs that were way too fast and i ended up losing my race performance in a training run -- so now i keep it pretty conservative. i think the range of 30-120 seconds is so big because there are just so many variables. i have done long runs at both ends of the spectrum, just depending on my fitness level at the time, how far out i am from my goal race, and how quickly i think i will be able to recover.

it sounds like you had no problem with the paces you ran today -- nicely done. you are in great shape right now. three in a row at OC -- you can do it!

From Maika on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 00:09:31 from 69.234.205.117

Allie - thanks so much for the advice. I really appreciate your help. I feel pretty "young" in the marathon world, and feel like training is sometimes hit-or-miss. With this marathon I feel like I am playing catch-up with my training, as it was planned after our trip to Europe was planned. Due to this, I feel like I don't have a lot of room for error in training. Thanks again!

Thanks for the encouragement for OC! I'd like to PR in this race, but with all the circumstances, I just hope to feel good and that I am in control of my run. Something I have not experienced in a marathon since the 2010 OC marathon.

Was close to goal marathon pace through 14 miles and then made a conscious decision to slow down and see if I could turn this into a longer run. About mile 15 I bonked (possibly could have needed a better dinner last night). Hopefully there was some physical progress made today, because I sure didn't gain any mental confidence.

I would say if you hit 14 miles at close to marathon pace, that definitely was a big physical gain, and should be a mental confidence booster as well! You're a fast runner - running marathon pace for that long in training is really hard to do.

From Maika on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 08:20:47 from 67.137.244.158

Thanks Jake, I really appreciate your encouragement and insight. I think the reason I was discouraged yesterday is because I felt like I was working a lot harder than I should have been to achieve that pace. 12 more miles? Yikes!

Andrea! Thanks for asking, yes the cold is almost gone now. Should be 100% in a couple days.

Sisters are a great blessing, but you have lots of wonderful training partners without being blood relatives!

10 miles. Inside today, pretty crazy rainstorm here in CA! Sounds wimpy, I know, but it was good to stay in because it helped me control the pace for a real recovery day rather than running too fast to get out of the rain. I'd describe today's pace as a recovery2 day.

82 miles in 6 days is a PR for me. Oh the temptation to run 8 tomorrow to hit 90 in a week! Sundays are usually not running days though...

Now I'm jumping in the car to make my way back to Utah. It will be fun to try to walk after 11 hours in the car!

Allie-thanks for the encouraging words, training is such a mental game! I'm a little freaked out about only having 3 weeks left.

Also, I noticed your concern with your racing right now. I was at a coaching clinic a few years ago and the comment was made to not let your mind stand in the way of what your body can do. You are doing great, and your fitness will come to you!

thanks maika. i appreciate that. i feel like i have fallen into a bit of a running funk over the past month or so. you are right though, the mind is just as much a part of this sport as the body, and positive thinking can really go a long way. thanks again.

10 miles. Hollow Road out-and-back. Super easy pace, it was fun to just run and not worry about a workout.

92 miles this week if I count my miles from Monday-Sunday (which I have always done since I started keeping track of mileage). Not sure if I'll do that again anytime soon and I hope it was helpful, not detrimental, to my training.

I'm pretty nervous about my training and preparation for this marathon. I feel like I was floating along, auditing a class (running miles, but not with any training effect) but then 3/4 of the way into the semester I found out I had to take the final  in order to retain any knowledge of the class. Cramming for tests is not nearly as successful as studying all along the way. Hopefully my "cram-session" will be enough for a decent run in 3 weeks.

i like the analogy, but i think you are much better prepared than just "cramming" for this thing. you had a really solid mileage week last week (92!), and already this week it looks like things are going really well -- strong workouts and another good week mileage-wise.

your workouts and your paces on your general base/recovery runs indicate that you are in very good shape (at least to me) :) trust the training -- i really think it has been sound. you may not have followed your ideal marathon buildup plan, but sometimes it's fun to see the product of a new experiment. enjoy the rest of your training as you head into the taper.

From Maika on Thu, Apr 19, 2012 at 21:48:25 from 67.137.244.158

Allie-thanks so much for the confidence builder! I have had a tendency to convince myself that I was better prepared than I truly was (my last three marathons are markers of that-I was way over-confident at TOU 2010). So this time I am hoping to approach it with a different mind-set. I will say that I am curious to see what this training approach does for me, but am still nervous about it because it is a true experiment!

Good luck on Saturday! You will do awesome! I love how comfortable you are with just signing up for races and being so successful at them!

Look back on the last 6 weeks of your training. First off, you have a strong mileage base. Go over all the workouts you've done - they don't lie! You're in great shape. I think the most important thing for the next few weeks is building your confidence and believing in your training!!

2 x 3 miles is a great marathon workout and provides the perfect stimulus to your body.

From Jake K on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 14:18:55 from 155.100.226.54

+1 on what Andrea said. You've had consistent mileage, excellent workouts - both from a speed and strength perspective... and you are doing workouts like this at altitude... finishing strong w/ a 6:07 is a great sign... there was a lot more than just "some" training benefit in that one! :-)

You're doing great - be confident in yourself - the workouts don't lie - you are fit and ready to roll!

From Maika on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 16:26:49 from 67.137.244.158

Thanks Andrea and Jake! I appreciate your reminders. This training cycle has just felt a little rushed so I just hope I have the base to back it up. Plus I have a history of being over-confident in races, which always results in a poor performance!

From Jake K on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 16:28:44 from 155.100.226.54

No amount of great training can make up for going out too hard. Just run smart and don't do anything silly in the first 10 miles... and then trust your fitness!

OC is like a week and a half away, right?

Didn't really know what to expect today. I think the last time I ran a 5k was about 5 years ago. I have never done a marathon "tune-up" 5k the week before a race, so I was a little nervous about doing something dumb and hurting myself. Fortunately everything is still in tact and feeling good.

Mile 1 went out fast, as expected. A really fast girl was there so it was good for me to have someone to pace off of for a bit. A SUPER fast guy was there who would have helped me PR in the 400m! (I didn't pace off of him.) We started about 100 meters behind the 1 Mile fun run so we had to do some weaving through traffic while manipulating a gravel-covered turn. All skin stayed gravel free! Fast Girl took off past me at about 0.5 miles so I just hung back because my garmin was telling me I was running 5:43. A pace I was sure I wouldn't sustain through the race. At about mile 1 I passed Fast Girl with a huge concern that it would come back to haunt me.

We made a hair-pin turn at about mile 1.1 and I looked up to only see hill. Oh boy, mile 2 was going to be fun. And it was...not very much fun. Luckily there were some guys in front of me that I could focus on as we trudged up the hill. I just focused on one at a time as I was able to get by them. Tried to squeeze out a "Nice Work!" but I'm sure all they heard were huge gasps of air. This mile greatly discouraged me because I could hardly hold a 6:30 pace and it was a lot of work. I kinda want to call the hill a mountain to make myself feel better!

Finally at about mile 2 the hill gave us some relief as we turned on to only a slight incline now. That lasted another 0.2 or so and then we got some flat ground. I regained my composure and settled back into a manageable pace, but still not the pace I was hoping for. One more turn and then we were home free to the finish. This downhill was nice, but not as steep as the uphill-go figure! I felt really controlled and comfortable so I probably should have pushed the pace a little, but I just don't know how to race a 5k! Came through the finish in 18:32, which is a PR as far as I know. Not quite what I was thinking, but I can't be upset about it.

You really crushed it in the last 1.1 - that's a fast split! The 5k takes a few times to get right. I always do a 5k the week before a good race - it especially makes marathon pace feel a lot easier!

Had a pretty good day today, I will say I am pleased with the outcome. The race felt good, and it felt like I controlled my race the whole way. I didn't get ahead of myself and I didn't let other people get in my head. I had a couple goals that I didn't meet, but looking back at the reason I was even able to prepare for and run this race starting 11 weeks ago, I kind of have to let those goals be for another time. As I stood at the start line I knew I had done just about everything a normal, working human could do to be ready in the time I'd had to prepare.

So now for the report...

Didn't sleep very much, finally my alarm went off at 3:40am. Got to the start line at 4:35am, earlier than I needed but better than being rushed. That's the worst way to start race morning! Felt pretty good on my easy, 10 min warm-up. Actually, felt numb, but much better than last year when I was almost in tears at the start because I felt so unprepared! Ran a few strides, dodging picture-taking racers and other bystanders. Got on the start line at 10 minutes before race-time only to have the race delayed for almost 15 minutes before PCH was finally clear. So much for the warm-up! And, oh the characters that think they belong in Corral A! This year it was a 60 year-old lady in a sun-shade visor-hat with tennis shoes she's been gardening in since she was my age. But apparently she was going to run as fast as the two Kenyan men she toed the line with!

Finally we were off! To run a smart race, I told myself if I saw any miles under 6:30, I would slow down. I started next to four women, only one of which I knew (Ieng), but I had already decided that today was not a race for place, it was a race for time. I had no expectations for anything but a smart race from myself. So I sat in third-fourth for the first few miles, jockeying back and forth with a couple women. The girl who shot out in front was carrying her phone/ipod in her hand! I thought she wouldn't last long (more on her later)...

Mile 1 is a little uphill, followed by some pretty good downhill to mile 2. Phone-girl up by about 10 seconds, Ieng and Orange-tank-top girl hovering close. Mile 2 was along PCH, I enjoy running down here so much! Ran by some neat little shops, people out eating breakfast, personal training studio-goers onlooking in jealousy (at least that's what I told myself), ran by the Bruegger's Bagels Kent and I ate at on our second day of married life together, made the turn at See's Candies to head down to the beach, so fun! Feeling very relaxed and controlled. Funny how race pace seems so easy when it's race-time!

Mile 3 was along Ocean Blvd looking down onto Corona Del Mar beach where I've enjoyed numerous bonfires, gorgeous morning! Ieng was gone at this point, I think she wisened up about the pace she took off at. Orange girl was hanging tough, but running on her toes! Oh my dear, that will not last 26 miles! She would pass me and then slow down, and then I would realize that my pace was under 6:30 so I'd slow down and she'd pass me again. Did this until Mile 5 when we both took some water. Orange was behind me at this point and I noticed between songs (I only listen to my ipod when I run races so I can't hear myself breathe!) that she was gasping for air already. Poor thing, hope she didn't just PR in the 5k! I didn't see her again...

Mile 6 we hair-pin turned under PCH and headed up a hill to the Upper Back Bay trail. Still feeling good, and enjoying all the cheering spectators! Made it up the hill just fine and hopped on the trail, and then had to maneuver around some happy-go-lucky guy and his dog. Apparently he thought it was really fun to be in the middle of the race course.

Miles 7-10 were through the Newport neighborhoods, lots of people out cheering. So fun! Gave some head nods and thumbs-up but didn't want to waste too much energy! Saw my parents for the first time at almost mile 8, only to get a look from my Mom telling me to get Phone-girl. All in good time Mom, I'm running my race, not hers! Passed her about 400m later, didn't see her for a while. Parents again at mile 10, they were everywhere! Also at mile 10 my calves teased me with attempted cramping but I just ignored them so they would go away.

Mile 11 had a pretty big hill, but was countered by a downhill first so my pace evened out.

Mile 12 was where the Ellipti-Go leader guide picked me up. Still feeling good and keeping the pace controlled. Parents again!

Mile 13 had a row of little kids lined up cheering, gave them a fist pump and they went crazy!

Mile 14-17 felt good. Steep hill/overpass to get over the 405 freeway. Stomach cramp at mile 14.5, that was weird, I just thought, "come on body, work with me!" Went away soon after! Hairpin turn right before mile 15 showed me that Phone-girl was still hanging about 400m back. Made me kind of nervous, but I still felt very controlled so I didn't worry too much. Ellipti-Go man informed me, in a little bit of a warning tone, that I had just put three 6:30 miles together. "Yep, that's what I have too!" I told him! I was actually a little surprised myself. Parents again, and my little sister had emerged from her beauty sleep in the back of the suburban, she's an awesome cheerleader once you get her going!

About mile 17.5 we entered Segerstrom High School. It was at least a 400m loop around the campus and back out, in a tear-drop shape loop. When we came out of the loop, Phone-girl was in front of me about 100m. I was totally confused. How did she get there? She never passed me and we stayed on the course the whole way. It was clear she had come into the high school and instead of running through campus, she just crossed over to the other side of the course and skipped that whole loop. When Ellipti-Go went to tell her she needed to turn around she told him no and kept running. She said the cop told her to go that way. I was ticked. When I saw her and then saw the Ellpti-Go man go over to the other side of the course, I stopped running and asked what the heck was going on, well okay, more like yelled, and got more upset than I should have. After a 5-7 second pause I started running again, not sure I was even going the right way now because I had gotten so turned around. Ellipti-Go man assured me he had informed race officials and it would not affect the outcome of the race. So I regained my composure and passed Phone-girl again. She was only about 50 feet behind me when I saw my parents again and so they thought I was dying. I ran by and told them, with an angry face, that she had cut the course. Then I refocused and found my pace again. I'm such a brat!

Mile 20 I got on the river trail and finally saw Kent. Poor guy had gotten a sudden onset of food-poisoning right after the start and ended up getting really sick and needing to buy new clothes at Wal-Mart before being able to get back on his bike to find me! So sad! He gave me new life as now my quads were teasing me with cramping.

Mile 21 was hard. All I could think of was how long TOU feels from mile 21 to the finish (probably because TOU has never felt good for me)! The spectators had set up an "Area 21" water station with aliens and spaceships so that distracted me, but the smile was gone. Poor kids were trying so hard!

Mile 22 I came off the river trail onto a sidewalk where a guy was doubled-over puking. Nice. I was already feeling sorry for myself.

Mile 23-24 I am not proud of, I got wimpy and forgot all the motivating things I told myself to think of when I got to this point. Felt sorry for myself because even though a hill had been taken out with a new course, it was now a steady grade for a longer time. Needed a slap in the face.

When I hit the mile 24 marker I just told myself, "9 more laps around a track and you'll be done." So I tried my best to "suck it up" and finish.

Mile 25 got me out of the neighborhood and back onto the main streets. This year was a new finish so I couldn't start my last mile build-up where I usually do. That did a number on my mind-game. But I just kept marking off the laps. Got onto Fairview and focused on the stoplight where I would make the next turn and turn off my ipod for the finish.

Mile 26 Ipod off, final kick on! I felt better than I thought! I was so happy, just thrilled to be there, headed toward a PR and lots of people cheering. Made the turn to the finish and enjoyed the final stretch, looking around and smiling wide! Came across the line so happy! Kent was there, followed quickly by Jess, who also had a very successful day in her first half!

I am very happy with the way the race turned out. I ran by myself for most of the race and am pleased I was able to maintain the paces I did without falling apart too bad. I am thrilled with the chance I had to run!

Great race report, I loved reading about every mile :) The situation with the phone girl sounds pretty annoying, but sometimes that little extra anger can give you the drive to push harder! Smart choice holding back the pace if it slipped under 6:30, your splits show that it seemed to work for you :)

10 miles with a sorry attempt at a 5k, so I am not making this a race report.

5k Fundraiser for Johnson & Draper Families. Heber City. Small event, went more for support than an actual race, which is how well I prepared all week for this. Didn't intend on racing because I thought it would be fun to run Kent and his buddies. We all know how that goes when you say you are just going to run for fun...

Didn't know the course, wasn't familiar with the area, so by mile 0.25 on the course I had already run about 0.55 miles. Played a bit of a game of catch-up after my wrong turn, or not-turn, (I did turn around to look at the two people behind me who signaled me to continue running straight when the course turned right; they realized it before I did...). Kent tried to yell at me apparently, but I didn't hear him. Caught back up to the front of the group, but the wind was a real bugger and stood all of us straight up/backward at one point and then the side-wind almost tangled up my feet (or I'm just a big clutz). I was lucky enough to get by everyone except for one. This was a sweet way for the race to end because the man who won is the father of the little girl who just got out of the hospital after a horrible accident that nearly took her life, and who the fundraiser was for.

Not so happy about my racing tactics or mind-set today. I had heavy legs and my mind was not willing to see past that. At the same time, I knew going into it that I did not prepare in any way for this to be a good race effort (except for skipping Rip60 last night after work).

Luckily the dogs didn't notice us, otherwise, Robin is a true sprinter and I would have been dog food.

No more running in San Bernardino, it's just not a safe place, even the firefighters told us we were crazy for going out on the streets.

6 miles. Wildcat Way Loop. Sludgy Monday start, but ended up averaging 6:50's so it didn't turn out so bad. Good thing because I didn't have time for a ton of miles.

8 miles. Providence Cemetery Loop. Brrr! It's more summer-y in California. I was kindly welcomed back by the altitude this morning, I thought it was going to be more unfriendly but we got along just fine! Maybe it's just because my mileage is accidently low this week due to time constraints so my legs are more fresh than they've been for a month.

Rip60! Yay, I'm back!

12 miles. Cache Valley Mall Loop. Garmin-less, lots of green lights, and even the right-hand-turners stopped BEFORE the crosswalk so I didn't have to hurdle any hoods. Glorious day in the sun!

haha. always a good day when you don't have to hurdle hoods...

From Maika on Fri, Jun 08, 2012 at 18:52:31 from 63.248.249.116

I have often thought about climbing through the back seat of the car that is stopped in the crosswalk, but I'm not brave enough. Hurdling is easier.

Nice miles today. Are you so excited that in two weeks you'll be waking up to the greatest day of your life?!!

From allie on Fri, Jun 08, 2012 at 19:02:17 from 97.126.209.117

i like to fling myself onto the hood for dramatic effect. it usually gets their attention.

yes, i am SO excited. i can't believe it's just two weeks to go! can't wait. :)

16 miles. Spent the morning at Kent's bike race, then came home and was really sick...flat on my back for a couple hours. Didn't think I'd be able to run at all, but then got motivated by all the UVM race reports. Nice job everyone!

Thanks Bec, yes it was exactly what I needed. Hope you have another awesome training week! There is nothing wrong with treadmilling when the weather is bad!

10 miles. Hollow Road. Felt great so I argued with myself the whole time about going longer or getting home in time to do a Rip60 workout.

Rip60 won, and I'm glad. Just wish Monday wasn't a big fat 0.

We runners seriously are addicted, arent' we? Don't worry about the zero on Monday, it won't affect you at all - in fact a random day off every once in a while usually makes the rest of my workouts that week pretty good (probably b/c I feel guilty for taking off :) Your mileage is awesome! What's up next, Des News? TOU?

From Maika on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 21:37:19 from 63.248.249.116

Melody-yes, even though I hadn't run on Sunday either, I needed Monday for some reason. As far as racing goes, both Des News and TOU are very tempting! I just need to make sure that I am trained fresh and not relying on old training. I did that all last summer and never really felt prepared for any of my races. So, long story short--no idea what my racing plans are!

10 miles. Temple Loop. Yesterday 6:45's felt like I was floating on air, today 7:55's felt like I was running in water. I love schizophrenic running legs.

Rip60-rocked my world today.

And...I almost got recruited for a Ragnar Ultra-team. Kinda wish I could do it. Kinda.

Ragnar always sounds fun about 6 months out! We did it right before we got married...you're right, the week before your wedding is busy! Enjoy every second though, it is over way too fast!

2 miles on the treadmill because I ended up having more time when I got home than I thought I would.

Thanks for thinking about me Angi! I am doing great, just not so great at blogging my training. Heavily considering a fall marathon, just not sure which one.

How are you doing? Racing seems to be going very well for you! How's life?
